Matt Turner has had his share of good moments at Nottingham Forest this season. He’s also had some tough moments as well. Despite an up-and-down campaign so far, the veteran shot-stopper knows it’s up to him to retain the No. 1 job.
Turner watched from the sidelines on Sunday as Nottingham Forest drew AFC Bournemouth 1-1 at the Vitality Stadium. It marked the eighth time this season that the 29-year-old was on the bench for the relegation-threatened squad.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad have failed to win any of their last four matches across all competitions, including three in league action. Turner’s errors haven’t helped at times this season, but the U.S. men’s national team No. 1 is confident he can play a role in Nottingham Forest turning its season around.
“Everything that could possibly have gone wrong in certain moments has gone completely wrong,” he said in an interview with ESPN. “Sometimes as goalkeepers you might get away with one or two things, and it feels like this season I’ve gotten away with zero. It’s tough to take.
“Now I’ve got a real fight on my hands for the position,” Turner added. “I’m no stranger to being in these types of scenarios. I’ve been overlooked and doubted many times in my life and my career, and I wouldn’t have gotten to this point if I wasn’t confident in myself. I can be somebody that has a real impact on this football club.”
Newly-acquired Matz Sels and Greek international Odysseas Vlachodimos will compete with Turner for the starting job as the Premier League campaign pushes forward.
