Matteo Berrettini Forced to Pull Out of 2024 Madrid Open

Matteo Berrettini Withdraws From 2024 Madrid Open

Former Madrid Open finalist Matteo Berrettini will not play at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament this year, as he withdrew one day before the draw.

The Italian recently returned to tennis, with a strong start on the ATP Challenger Tour, reaching a final in the first week back. He then continued on the ATP Tour, winning the trophy in Marrakech, his second Tour-level event since his comeback. However, subsequent events did not go as well, with a first-round loss in Monte Carlo and now withdrawing from the Madrid tournament due to illness.

Berrettini cited safety concerns, revealing he has been struggling with illness that has now developed into tonsillitis and a fever, making it unsafe for him to compete in Madrid. His focus now shifts to recovering quickly and preparing for the Italian Open in Rome, a significant event for him as he hails from the Italian capital.
