Kylian Mbappé and PSG in Heated Legal Dispute Over Financial Claims

November 17, 2025, 02:24 PM ET

A legal confrontation between Paris Saint-Germain and Kylian Mbappé intensified this week as both parties outlined significant financial claims against each other.

The French forward and his former club are embroiled in a dispute concerning unpaid wages, recently brought to attention in an industrial court setting. Mbappé, who skipped the court session, previously stated he is owed €55 million (approximately $63 million) by the reigning champions of Europe. However, he is now pursuing a demand surpassing €260 million (around $301 million), asserting this amount is due because his temporary contract should be recognized as permanent. Such a status change would result in compensation for unfair dismissal, owed wages, bonuses, and severance pay.

Furthermore, he has claimed damages regarding moral harassment, unreported work, and violations of PSG’s obligations of good faith and care.

“Kylian Mbappé is not requesting anything outside the boundaries of the law; he merely seeks to enforce his legal entitlements, akin to any employee,” remarked the player’s representatives in a statement.

On the other side, PSG is seeking a cumulative total of €440 million (about $510 million) from the striker, which includes €180 million (approximately $208 million) for the “loss of opportunity” stemming from his departure as a free agent, after he rejected a €300 million ($348 million) offer from Saudi club Al Hilal in July 2023.

The club argues it deserves compensation for breaches of good faith in negotiations and contract adherence, in addition to damages to their reputation and image.

A ruling from the court is anticipated next month.

PSG contended that when Mbappé was sidelined ahead of the 2023-24 campaign—following his decision against extending his contract—a verbal agreement existed wherein he consented to forfeit bonuses to return to the team.

In their statement, the club provided evidence suggesting the player exhibited disloyalty by withholding his decision against extending his contract for nearly 11 months, from July 2022 to June 2023, thus depriving the club of any chance to arrange a transfer.

According to PSG, an agreement established in August 2023 outlined a salary reduction if he chose to leave for free, aimed at safeguarding the financial stability of the club post their significant investment.

Mbappé’s representatives countered that PSG failed to produce proof of any agreement to forego these payments.

In terms of moral harassment allegations, Mbappé highlighted the “lofting” he purportedly experienced at the club. This term in France refers to actions taken to isolate a player from the main squad for varying reasons, whether sporting, administrative, or disciplinary.

The forward expressed dissatisfaction regarding his treatment by PSG when he was sidelined prior to the 2023-24 season, after determining not to extend his contract.

Having joined Real Madrid on a free transfer during the summer of 2024, Mbappé leaves PSG after scoring a remarkable 256 goals in seven years, during which the club secured the Champions League title in his absence this year.

The relationship between Mbappé and PSG soured deeply, especially after the club provided him with the most lucrative contract in their history in 2022. A year later, he shocked them by declining to activate an option for an additional year in his contract, leading PSG to a difficult position of needing to transfer him to avoid losing him for free at the end of the contract. Mbappé was signed from Monaco for €180 million (about $209 million) in 2017.

After announcing he would not continue with PSG, he was excluded from the preseason tour in Japan and South Korea, forced to train with reserve players. While initially left out of the opening league match of the season, he quickly returned to the main lineup following discussions.

PSG refuted the claims of harassment or undue pressure, noting that Mbappé participated in over 94% of the official matches during the 2023-24 season, with all sporting decisions made by a coach who is now a Champions League champion. They emphasized that he consistently operated within the standards outlined in the Professional Football Charter.
