McEnroe: Swiatek’s Grass Struggles Could Benefit Gauff at Wimbledon

John McEnroe spoke about the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, admitting that he could see Coco Gauff win her second major.

The 20-year-old won her maiden Grand Slam trophy at the US Open last year, which changed expectations for her. It wasn’t just about making the final anymore; it was about winning a Grand Slam, and that’s her goal also at SW19.

She publicly admitted that winning the French Open was a goal of hers, but it didn’t work out, as Iga Swiatek proved too good. The Polish player isn’t known as a great grass player, which is why McEnroe thinks that there is an opening for other players.

He’s not the only one who thinks that. Gauff is among those players who could use that to their advantage, especially since her game suits the grass courts.

“Coco Gauff is a great player. She’s got the major (US Open title in 2023) and knows how to play on the grass. She’s more comfortable on it than Iga Swiatek is. That doesn’t mean Iga isn’t going to figure something out, but she’s more vulnerable on grass than any other surface. It opens the door for some other players.”

The chances of Gauff beating Swiatek are dramatically higher on grass than on clay. She’ll have a chance to beat her if the match is on the surface, but the American can also be beaten on it.

She’s far from perfect, but the improvements she’s made are clear. It’s going to be a very interesting Wimbledon because other players, like former champion Elena Rybakina, are in the mix as well. Don’t forget Aryna Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur, Naomi Osaka, and others.

“Elena Rybakina, the way she plays, it suits her game more and it’s the same for Aryna Sabalenka, they are big hitters. It’ll be interesting to see what Naomi Osaka can do on the grass. The door is open, for sure.”
