Medvedev Clinches Dubai Title After Opponent Withdraws from Final

Daniil Medvedev achieved a significant milestone in his career over the weekend by securing his second title at the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The Russian tennis star, currently ranked No. 11 in the world, had previously conquered this tournament in 2023. This victory, however, came under atypical circumstances as Medvedev did not need to compete in the final match; he received a walkover from his intended opponent, Tallon Griekspoor.

Griekspoor’s withdrawal was due to a hamstring injury he sustained during his semifinal clash with Andrey Rublev. After the match, the Dutch player sought medical attention and underwent scans that revealed a serious injury, preventing him from taking the court for the matchup against Medvedev.

Reflecting on his achievement, Medvedev expressed disbelief at winning an event for the second time in a row, especially considering he did so without stepping onto the court for the final. “That’s what is crazy about it. I never did it in any city in the world, and the first time I do it, it’s a walkover,” he remarked. He went on to highlight the quality of his practice leading up to the tournament, noting, “We knew it was going to be a great week.”

On the other hand, Griekspoor expressed disappointment over his injury, stating, “I have been better, that’s for sure. Unfortunately, I hurt myself during the semifinals.” He acknowledged the impact it would have on his upcoming matches, confirming that he would be sidelined for several weeks.

With this title, Medvedev not only ended his unusual statistic of winning ATP titles without repeating victories at the same location but also reaffirmed his standing as a formidable force in the men’s tennis circuit.
