Daniil Medvedev says he is feeling as motivated as ever, but he finds motivation in a different way than he did in the past.
Medvedev, who recently lost to Taylor Fritz at the World Tennis League, has achieved so much in the game. The 27-year-old was the 2021 US Open champion and has 20 ATP titles to his name.
Last season was another very strong one for the world No. 3. He reached a third US Open final and also won two Masters 1000 events, including the Italian Open, which was his first clay court title at the ATP level.
However, Medvedev has explained that his mindset is different from a few years ago and that he finds the drive to succeed in a different manner than previously.
“I’m not anymore 23 and going for my first big title and I’m like ‘OK I want to do more.’ So at this stage of my life, at least right now, I hope this can just be for a long time. I just have the biggest motivation ever to just continue finding my limits, to just go for more.”
Medvedev is as refreshingly honest as always. He acknowledges that his younger self focused more on big titles, while now he finds huge motivation in pushing his own limits. That approach could help his longevity in the game.
The five-time Grand Slam finalist also plans to improve his mentality further, which he admits was an issue at the end of the 2023 season.
“I was a little bit too much all over the place because I was mentally tired. So I’m going to try to do all of this better next year and hopefully I can become a better player.”
Medvedev, who has been teaming up with best friend Rublev at the World Tennis League, seems to have a real clarity to his approach and should be mentally refreshed for the 2024 season.
That is likely to help Medvedev as he seeks to add a second Grand Slam to his already impressive achievements.
