Melbourne: Australian Open Qualifying Round Begins

Qualifying for the Australian Open commenced on Monday at the iconic Melbourne Park, featuring a mix of top contenders and rising stars. Although there were no British women competing on the first day, the spotlight was stolen by notable players such as Taylor Townsend, currently ranked World No. 2 in doubles, and former US Open champion Sloane Stephens, both of whom advanced to the second round of the three-round qualifying event.

Sloane Stephens, struggling for form but looking to regain her competitive edge, expressed relief at securing a victory after an extended period. “I haven’t won in a very long time, so it was nice to just get a win. Playing here is always special,” she reflected after dispatching Czech player Barbora Palicova with a scoreline of 6-1, 7-5.

Townsend, the 11th seed in the qualifying draw, faced a challenging match but ultimately triumphed over Japan’s Nao Hibino, clinching the match 6-7(3), 6-0, 7-5 following an intense battle that required seven match points. The experience left Townsend feeling accomplished, as she praised her ability to adapt and strategize mid-match. “I’m super proud of myself for the way that I went out there and the way that I was problem-solving,” she said.

Returning to Melbourne with renewed energy after a restful off-season, Townsend shared a break with Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion. She highlighted the bond they share, stating, “Now I have a friend on tour, which is really cool. It’s really nice to have someone that I’m really comfortable with; I haven’t had that in a long time.”

In another highlight of the day, Spaniard Guiomar Maristany Zuleta De Reales delivered a significant upset by eliminating the third-seeded Mayar Sherif from Egypt. Maristany’s 6-4, 6-3 win set the stage for a second-round clash with Tatiana Prozorova of Russia.

Additionally, second-seeded Lucia Bronzetti managed to sidestep an early exit, edging out Spain’s Aliona Bolsova after a tough three-set match that ended 6-0, 6-7(3), 6-1. Bronzetti, who has previously upset two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, will face American Mary Stoiana next, who secured her spot with a dramatic three-set victory over Italy’s Nuria Brancaccio.

Viktoriya Tomova from Bulgaria also advanced, showing resilience in her comeback win against American Bernarda Pera, overcoming an initial set loss to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. Tomova, once ranked as high as 46th in the world, noted the challenge of facing a long-time friend in Pera.

The day concluded with notable performances from other rising talents, including Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, who celebrated a hard-fought victory over Canada’s Kayla Cross, and Slovakia’s Viktoria Hruncakova, who convincingly won against Burundi’s Sada Nahimana.

As the qualifying rounds continue, these early matches are setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting and unpredictable Australian Open.
