Melbourne: Djokovic Achieves New Milestone

Novak Djokovic reached a remarkable milestone by securing his 400th match victory at a Grand Slam tournament, defeating the Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4). The contest lasted two hours and 44 minutes, marking a significant achievement as Djokovic became the first player in tennis history to reach this mark within the Open Era.

After the match, Djokovic reflected on his ongoing journey in tennis, saying, “I’m trying to give these young guys a push for their money. I’m still around — I’m hanging in there.” This victory also brought Djokovic closer to another record, as he celebrated his 102nd win at the Australian Open, tying Roger Federer’s all-time record for the tournament.

Having competed in 21 editions of the Australian Open, Djokovic expressed caution despite his successful start to the tournament, stating, “It’s been a great start to the tournament. But I’m not getting ahead of myself. I learned a lesson last year; I got too ahead of myself too early in some of the Grand Slams.” The fourth seed is now set to face Czech player Jakub Mensik, who advanced after overcoming America’s Ethan Quinn with a scoreline of 6-2, 7-6(5), 7-6(5). A win here would set Djokovic on a potential collision course with reigning champion Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic noted the current dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner in men’s tennis, acknowledging their impressive level of play while conveying his persistence. He highlighted the importance of each match: “When you enter the court and the ball rolls, you always have a chance, particularly here on the court that has given me the most in my career.”

The match against Van de Zandschulp was not without its challenges. After falling behind in the second set, Van de Zandschulp took a medical timeout for a shoulder issue but briefly surprised Djokovic with a rally, highlighting the competitive nature of the match. However, Djokovic quickly regained control, even as he faced his own injury concerns with a fall early in the third set. After dropping his serve, Djokovic showcased his resilience, saving two set points at 5-6 and ultimately sealing the match.

In a notable moment for Italian tennis, all three of their players—Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti, and Luciano Darderi—advanced to the last 16 of a major tournament for the first time. Musetti achieved this milestone after a grueling five-set match against Tomas Machac, finally winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. He expressed joy over his achievement, stating his pride in being part of this formidable trio and looked forward to his next challenge against fifth seed Taylor Fritz.

Darderi also made history by defeating 15th-seed Karen Khachanov to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time, although he faces the challenge of taking on his compatriot, the second-seeded Sinner, next.

In other match results, eighth-seed Ben Shelton prevailed against Valentin Vacherot with a straight-set victory of 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(5), marking his third consecutive straight-sets win. Shelton’s upcoming encounter features him against Casper Ruud, who concluded a hard-fought match against Marin Cilic, securing a 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory. Ruud’s focus is intensifying as he awaits news of his wife’s impending delivery of their first child back in Norway.

As the tournament progresses, fans can anticipate thrilling matchups in the coming rounds, particularly with seasoned champions and promising newcomers vying for glory on the grand stage of the Australian Open.
