Arthur Fery captured attention during his Australian Open debut by upsetting 20th seed Flavio Cobolli in a straight-sets victory on the tournament’s first day. Fery, who garnered his spot in the main draw by successfully navigating the qualifying rounds, secured a commanding 7-6(1), 6-4, 6-1 win, marking his second victory at the Grand Slam level after a first-round win at Wimbledon the previous year.
Following the match, a visibly elated Fery shared his thoughts on the experience: “It’s incredible to be here. This is my first time playing a main-draw Slam outside of Wimbledon, and it didn’t disappoint, with great fans and a fantastic court.”
The 23-year-old Londoner, currently ranked 185 in the world, displayed excellent form and shot-making throughout the contest, converting six out of ten break-point opportunities over the course of the two-hour, 12-minute match. On the other side of the net, Cobolli, ranked 22, struggled with an apparent stomach issue that necessitated a medical timeout shortly after the match commenced. Despite his efforts, the Italian could not find an answer to Fery’s persistent aggressiveness.
Cobolli’s exit from the tournament represents a significant disappointment, especially considering he played a pivotal role in leading the Italian team to a third consecutive Davis Cup title in November with standout performances against top competitors from Spain and Belgium.
Fery’s mother, Olivia, flew to Melbourne to witness her son’s achievement firsthand, a display of support that Fery deeply appreciated. Reflecting on his family’s unwavering encouragement, he said, “They’ve been extremely supportive, not only now but over the past 10 to 15 years I’ve been involved in sports. It’s important to recognize their help, especially during the challenging times I faced in the last couple of years with injuries, including a bruised bone in my arm. It’s been a long journey.”
Next up for Fery is a second-round clash against Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry, the world number 61 who overcame Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in a hard-fought five-set match, finishing 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Joining Fery in the second round is fellow Brit Cameron Norrie, seeded 26th, who faced a tough challenge against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi. In a gripping five-set battle, Norrie prevailed with a scoreline of 6-0, 6-7(2), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, showcasing his tenacity on the court. He will next meet Emilio Nava, who triumphed over France’s Kylian Jacquet in a nail-biting match that ended with the score of 6-2, 7-5, 6-7(5), 4-6, 7-6(6).
As the tournament progresses, fans eagerly await the next chapters of these promising British stars’ journeys in Melbourne.
