Memphis Depay, Former Manchester United Winger, Departs Atletico Madrid – Latest Man United News and Transfer Updates

Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay leaves Atletico Madrid - Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United’s business in the transfer market has left a lot to be desired over the last decade.

Many star names have come and gone after failing to make the grade in Manchester.

One of those players is Memphis Depay who signed for the club in 2015 as one of the brightest young talents in Europe.

However, things didn’t quite work out as planned for Depay at United and he left the club under a cloud of disappointment just two years later.

The forward went on to represent Lyon and Barcelona before joining Atletico Madrid last summer for a poultry €3 million fee.

However, despite some decent performances, the Dutchman has announced he will be leaving the Spanish capital after a year under Diego Simeone’s tutelage.

Depay released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) confirming his exit and suggesting there may have been more to the decision than meets the eye.

“Not easy to say how I feel about writing this message because I feel that things could’ve been very different. Maybe it’s better to keep that conversation for another time…” he said.

Depay then expressed his gratitude to everyone connected with the club.

“To Atleti, my teammates, the staff and specially the fans, I wanna thank you for the energy and support I’ve experienced in my time being a Atleti player I keep the good memories close to my heart.
Gracias. Aupa Atleti!” he wrote.

Depay made 53 appearances at Old Trafford, scoring just seven times, eventually being moved on by Jose Mourinho.

The 30-year-old will be hoping to make the Netherlands final 23-man-squad for the upcoming European Championships where he can showcase his talent to potential suitors looking to bolster their attacking numbers for next season.
