Merino Criticizes Caicedo’s Red-Card Tackle
Mikel Merino has described Moisés Caicedo’s tackle as “horrible,” following a first-half foul that resulted in a red card for the Chelsea midfielder. This incident occurred during the 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Spanish international, Merino, scored the equalizer for Arsenal in the second half, leveling the score after Trevoh Chalobah had put Chelsea ahead just after the break. This result keeps Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
The pivotal moment of the match unfolded in the 38th minute when referee Anthony Taylor, after consulting VAR, decided to send off Caicedo for a challenge that caught Merino on the ankle with his studs.
Despite undergoing extensive treatment, Merino was fit to continue and expressed that he recognized the severity of the challenge immediately. “I felt my ankle twist, but fortunately my ankles are quite flexible. I wasn’t worried about my safety, but I knew it was a bad tackle that would lead to a red card,” Merino stated in an interview with Sky Sports.
In comments to the BBC, Merino added, “As this is a London derby, you expect a lot of passion. That tackle was tough and harsh. This league demands high standards, and every player must rise to the occasion.” When questioned about whether Caicedo reached out to apologize, Merino replied, “No, nothing.”
The match was marked by physicality, with referee Taylor issuing seven yellow cards in total. Merino noted that the encounter showcased the intensity typical of the Premier League.
“This is the Premier League. It’s a strong competition characterized by numerous transitions. Winning a duel opens up opportunities to attack,” he reflected. “It’s difficult to come here and secure a point. We could have managed the game better, especially regarding their pressing tactics.” Despite drawing the match, Merino acknowledged Chelsea as a quality side.
