Lionel Messi led the heartfelt tributes for Jordi Alba following the defender’s announcement of his retirement from football at the conclusion of the 2025 Major League Soccer season. Alba’s departure signifies a notable shift in the sport, as many believe the field will not be the same without him.
The 34-year-old announced his retirement through a video shared on his Instagram account.

Messi expressed his sentiments in the comments, saying, “Thanks to you, Jordi. I will miss you a lot. After so many experiences together, it will feel odd not seeing you beside me.” He also reflected on the numerous assists Alba provided over the years, questioning who would deliver those key passes moving forward.
Messi and Alba initially joined forces at Barcelona before both transferred to Inter Miami in the summer of 2023, continuing their collaboration on the pitch. During their time at Barcelona, they both contributed to winning five LaLiga titles, a Champions League trophy, and five Copa del Rey cups.
At Inter Miami, they achieved remarkable success by clinching the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, while also setting a league record for the highest points in a single season.
Throughout their partnership, particularly during crucial matches, Alba and Messi frequently connected in the attacking phase. Most recently, Messi assisted Alba in scoring during a 4-1 victory against the New England Revolution on October 4.
In total, Alba has provided Messi with 33 assists during their careers, ranking behind only three players: Luis Suárez (60), Dani Alves (42), and Andrés Iniesta (37), who have assisted Messi more.
As the 2026 season approaches, Messi will step onto the field without both Alba and Sergio Busquets, who previously announced his own retirement from the sport.
While Messi’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, sources indicate he is likely to sign a multi-year extension with Inter Miami, ensuring his presence in South Florida for additional seasons.
Tributes flooded in for Alba, with former teammates like Neymar and Suárez, who are now also at Miami, paying their respects on social media. Suárez commented, “Brother, what can I say? You’re incredible; enjoy what remains.” Neymar added, “You’re amazing, brother. Big hugs!”
