Edwin Diaz’s first season back from a torn patellar tendon in his knee has been challenging. The New York Mets closer, known as one of MLB’s best pitchers when healthy, has recently struggled, leading to questions about his role as the ninth-inning stopper.

The Mets have announced an update on his health, placing him on the 15-Day IL due to a right shoulder impingement. Left-handed pitcher Josh Walker has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse in his place.

There are two theories regarding Diaz’s situation. One suggests that his recent poor performance is due to a legitimate injury, while the other proposes a “phantom IL designation” to allow him time to reset and work on his mechanics.

While the exact nature of his condition remains uncertain, Diaz will be sidelined for at least two weeks. At 30 years old, he is likely to bounce back from this setback and resume his pitching duties once he is fully healthy.

Shoulder impingements can be managed with proper treatment, and Diaz’s absence will give him the opportunity to address any underlying issues affecting his performance.

More details about his recovery timeline are expected soon, but for now, the Mets will have to manage without Diaz in their bullpen.
