Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, confirmed on Monday that infrastructure upgrades ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be finished before the tournament kicks off in June. These enhancements include the refurbishment of two terminals at the Mexico City International Airport and the construction of a train line that will link the airport to Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Santa Lucía, approximately 30 miles from the capital.
The World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 13 matches in Mexico, with five games being held in Mexico City. The cities of Guadalajara and Monterrey will host the remaining eight matches.
According to Sheinbaum, the federal government will allocate $489 million for the airport renovations. She remarked, “This event is not just a showcase of elite soccer but also an opportunity to share our identity and cultural richness with the world. Mexico is experiencing a historic moment.”
Making history as Mexico’s first female president, she also indicated that further federal projects are anticipated in Monterrey and Guadalajara, with additional details to be announced in the near future.
The iconic Azteca Stadium, which is scheduled to be the first venue to hold three opening matches in World Cup history, is currently under renovation. However, the funding for this project comes from a private entity, and Sheinbaum did not disclose further specifics.
She expressed optimism about the event, stating that Mexico is preparing for an influx of roughly 5.5 million visitors across the three host cities. “This will be a remarkable period with substantial economic benefits, and we will be ready in a few months,” she affirmed.
