The round of 128 at the 2024 Miami Open is complete. On day two, Felix Auger-Aliassime and veterans Gael Monfils and Roberto Bautista Agut progressed to round two.
Monfils moved through after serving his way past the reliable Dusan Lajovic 7-6(5), 6-4. The Frenchman was appearing in his 12th Miami draw and has a chance of playing Alcaraz in the third round.
Roberto Bautista Agut is also playing Miami for the 12th time, and he fought past Emilio Nava 6-3 7-6(4) despite the American hitting 47 winners to Agut’s nine.
Dan Evans also started to get his season back on track; having won just two matches all year, he recovered from a set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego for the first time in four attempts.

Ofner Offloads Nishikori
As expected, Kei Nishikori’s campaign in Miami was short-lived as he fell to Sebastian Ofner 3-6 4-6.
Kei has played zero competitive tennis since last July, making it impossible to drop him straight back in at the Masters 1000 level and expect results.
Despite that, he looked to be moving pretty well and has a wildcard into Barcelona, so I was likely wrong about his comeback being more of a farewell tour.
The former world number four also took on Thomas Johanssen as a coach. But why not play some lower-calibre events? It’s not guaranteed to pay off, as Thiem found out with two horrendous losses, but he’d quickly find out where his level is.
Evans Silences Sonego
Dan Evans is one of two Brits to have had a woeful start to 2024 and had won just two matches all season before his encounter with Lorenzo Sonego.
Evans tore his calf last October, and since returning to action, he’s struggled to find the form that earned him a maiden ATP 500 title last year in Washington.
Lorenzo Sonego had also proved to be somewhat his kryptonite, winning their previous three matches comfortably, and after the Italian blitzed the first set 6-1, things didn’t look great.
However, Evans dug in and started establishing himself in the forecourt. His serve allowed him to step forward as he fought back to win through 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

- Auger-Aliassime Wins Opener: It’s not long since Felix received a first-round bye at the Masters 1000 level, but his ranking has been on the slide, and he faced three set points on serve at 4-5 in the first set before rallying past qualifier Adam Walton. He’ll face Sascha Zverev next.
- Monfils Defeats Lajovic: The Frenchman didn’t face a breakpoint. He played a somewhat uncharacteristic solid performance with no level drop to see off Dusan Lajovic 7-6(5), 6-4.
- Carballas-Baena Sets Alcaraz Showdown: The Spaniard came through Aleksandar Vukic 7-6(2), 6-3 to set up a tie with fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz.
