Michigan HC Sends A Clear Message About J.J. McCarthy Doubters

Right now, it seems that University of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is the most-talked-about player who will be taken in next week’s NFL Draft.

Some feel he has potential that goes beyond the numbers he put up for the Wolverines, while others point to those somewhat modest numbers as the reason he won’t do that well at the next level.

But new Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, who has been on the school’s coaching staff since 2018, thinks very highly of McCarthy, per NBC Sports Boston.

“He’s the ultimate winner and competitor,” Moore said.

In high school, McCarthy won both a state title and a national championship, and at Michigan, he took the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, where they defeated the University of Washington.

Last season, he completed 72.3 percent of his pass attempts while throwing for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Under then-head coach Jim Harbaugh, who recently left to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, the Wolverines ran the football a lot, which likely depressed McCarthy’s numbers.

But he can maneuver out of the pocket, and when he is in the pocket, he can absorb contact while still making accurate throws.

McCarthy has a chance of being one of the first five players taken in the draft, especially if a team with a lower pick trades up in order to nab him.

One team talked about as a candidate to trade up for McCarthy is the Minnesota Vikings, who have plenty of young offensive talent but need a quarterback after four-time Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins left them in free agency.
