Welcome back to Top of the Order!
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I’ll be starting your baseball day with some news, notes, and thoughts about the game we love.
Angels Struggle Without Mike Trout
Things couldn’t be going worse for the Angels. The Halos have stumbled to an 11-19 record in Ron Washington’s first year managing them, and he’ll now try to tread water without his best player. Future Hall of Famer Mike Trout is set to undergo knee surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee. While it isn’t expected to end his season, it will keep him out for a while.
Trout started the year in fine form, with a wRC+ of 142 and 10 home runs tying him for the league lead. His production was elite despite a low .194 BABIP. He was on pace for his first 30/30 season since his 2012 rookie campaign.
Trout hasn’t played more than 120 games in a season since 2019, which raises concerns about his return timeline.
Mickey Moniak to Replace Trout
Even so, the Angels still have to play games without Trout. Taylor Ward and Jo Adell will anchor the lineup and outfield, with Mickey Moniak expected to replace Trout in center field.
Bryce Miller’s Emergence
Mariners righty Bryce Miller shined against the Braves, showcasing his talent on the mound. His adjustments in pitch selection have made him more effective this season, with a 2.04 ERA in his first six starts.
Jack Flaherty’s Strong Start
Jack Flaherty, facing his former team, the Cardinals, delivered an exceptional performance for the Tigers. His 2.85 FIP and league-leading strikeout-to-walk ratio indicate a strong season ahead for him. His consistency in making starts and pitching quality innings bodes well for the Tigers’ pitching rotation.
