San Diego FC hires Mikey Varas as first head coach

San Diego FC has appointed its first head coach in preparation for its MLS debut in 2025.

Mikey Varas has been selected as the club’s inaugural head coach, as announced by San Diego FC on Monday. Varas joins the team after recently fulfilling the role of interim head coach for the U.S. men’s national team during the September fixtures.

“We believe Mikey is the perfect candidate to lead San Diego FC as the Club’s first Head Coach,” stated SDFC Chairman, Sir Mohamed Mansour. “With our upcoming inaugural season, Mikey’s leadership qualities, drive for immediate success, and his comprehensive knowledge of player development make him the ideal choice to guide our Club into the future.”

Varas previously led the USMNT U-20 team after his appointment in November 2021. He notably secured a CONCACAF U-20 Championship victory in 2022, earning the United States a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

In addition, Varas guided the U.S. to a top finish in their group at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in Argentina. He also contributed as an opposing team scout for Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT squad during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Prior to his involvement with U.S. Soccer, Varas served as an assistant coach for FC Dallas under the leadership of former head coach Luchi Gonzalez for three seasons. He played a key role in mentoring various homegrown talents, including Paxton Pomykal, Ricardo Pepi, and others.

“I am privileged to become a part of San Diego FC as the Club’s inaugural Head Coach,” expressed Varas. “The chance to establish something extraordinary from scratch, with such determined and dedicated ownership, in a city with such an enthusiastic fan base, is truly thrilling. I am eager to collaborate with the team and the community to foster a winning mentality right from the beginning. I am fully committed to this club and the people of San Diego.”

San Diego FC has already secured the signatures of six players for the 2025 season, including Mexican international Hirving Lozano and Northern Ireland international Paddy McNair.
