One of the rising forces on the WTA Tour has paired with a legend…

16-year-old Mirra Andreeva is conducting a trail with former Grand Slam champion Conchita Martinez this week in Rouen, where the 43rd-ranked Russian is currently into the second round at the Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole 2024.

“So far, so good,” said Andreeva, who defeated Nadia Podoroska 6-1, 6-3 in first-round action, “I like it, I hope she likes it too.

Andreeva is 6-4 in 2024 with a trip to the round of 16 at this year’s Australian Open. She lost in the first round at Indian Wells to Katie Volynets and subsequently pulled out of the Miami Open with a wrist injury, which she says is fine now.

“We will see how it will go and then we will decide about our next tournaments,” said Andreeva, who will turn 17 on April 29. “I cannot say there are special aspects we are working on. But the first thing we worked on was my slice, because she was a good slicer. So she told me some tricks, and I’m trying to use it when I have time and a good possibility on court.”

Martinez, the 1994 Wimbledon champion and a former World No.2, also coached former World No.1s Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova. She started working with Andreeva a few weeks ago, and Rouen is the first tournament they are contesting together during their trial period.
