The New York Mets’ latest win came at a steep price. Carlos Mendoza could be without his closer for the foreseeable future. According to a report by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Edwin Diaz is now looking at a 10-game suspension after being ejected during his team’s 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Diaz came on in the ninth inning to get the save for his team before the umpire noticed something odd. He didn’t throw a single pitch, and upon further review, they found a suspicious substance on his glove and throwing hand.

The umpire claimed that he had too much rosin, sweat, and dirt on his throwing hand. However, when asked about the situation, the chief crew officer claimed that the substance definitely wasn’t rosin and sweat, adding that this particular substance was very sticky.

Diaz stated that, like most pitchers, he uses a little rosin for grip and control, but he denied any wrongdoing or using any banned substance. As of now, Diaz isn’t sure whether he’s going to appeal the suspension, adding that he was ‘really surprised’ by the ejection.

The Mets are on a roll right now, winning 10 of their last 13 and going 13-6 in June, so the timing couldn’t be any worse, especially with the New York Yankees on deck.
