St. Louis CITY SC bolstered its full back options ahead of the 2024 MLS season.
Norwegian defender Tomas Totland joined the Western Conference club from Swedish top-flight side BK Häcken, the club announced Thursday. The 24-year-old signed a three-year deal with St. Louis through the 2026 MLS season.
“We are excited to bring Tomas to St. Louis after a lot of interest from European and MLS teams,” sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel said in a press release. “He comes to our team with experience at a high level, including playing in both Champions League and Europa League matches this season. Along with his experience, he is well-rounded in both the attacking and defending phases.”
Totland has played majority of his professional career in his native Norway before moving to Sweden in 2022. He has totaled 14 goals and 19 assists in 180 matches across all competitions.
He lifted the 2022 Allsvenskan title with Hacken and also featured in both the UEFA Champions and Europa League competitions.

DC United acquires Garrison Tubbs from Atlanta United
DC United added youth to its defensive corps in the form of Garrison Tubbs.
Tubbs, who was recently signed a homegrown contract with Atlanta United, was traded to DC United on Thursday. In exchange for Tubbs’ services, the Five Stripes will receive $125,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money (GAM) and an additional $150,000 in performance-based GAM.
“We are getting a young defender with a high ceiling for growth and development in Garrison,” D.C. general manager and chief soccer officer Ally Mackay said in a press release “He’s coming off an impressive season with Wake Forest and he has all the tools necessary to be a great defender in this league. We’re excited to bring him to the nation’s capital.”
Tubbs came through the Atlanta United Academy before spending the past four seasons at Wake Forest University. He was a First-Team All-American in 2023, while also earning ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
In total, Tubbs scored three goals and added five assists in 68 career appearances for the Demon Deacons.
Tubbs will seek an immediate role with DC United, who will be seeking a first playoff berth since 2019 once the new season begins.
Red Bulls sign Daniel Edelman to contract extension
New York Red Bulls homegrown midfielder Daniel Edelman has been rewarded with a long-term contract extension.
Edelman’s new contract will run through the 2027 MLS season, the Eastern Conference club announced Thursday. The 20-year-old has scored two goals and added one assist in 39 regular-season appearances since 2022.
“We are very excited to keep Daniel at the club for the long-term and continue with us,” head of sport Jochen Schneider said in a press release. “Daniel exemplifies all our core values and has a great winning mentality. He is a player that leads by example and will continue to represent our club in the best way on and off the field.”
A former U.S. Under-20 men’s national team captain, Edelman is one of several key homegrown players in the Red Bulls squad. He is joined by John Talkin, Serge Ngoma, and Peter Stroud heading into 2024.
New York reached the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2023, but suffered elimination at the hands of FC Cincinnati over two matches.
LA Galaxy signs John Nelson
Raheem Edwards has left the LA Galaxy defensive corps but the Western Conference club did fill his spot in the squad on Thursday.
Former U.S. youth national team defender John Nelson signed with the Galaxy on a two-year deal, the club announced. Nelson previously spent time with St. Louis CITY SC, FC Cincinnati, and FC Dallas, logging 71 appearances and four assists over that span.
“John is an established defender with strong MLS experience for his age,” Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said in a press release. “He will add depth and a veteran presence to our back line and we look forward to bringing him into our group.”
Edwards’ departure to CF Montreal could open the door for Nelson to jump right into Greg Vanney’s squad. Julian Aude is also a candidate to feature at left back after signing with the Galaxy last year via the league’s U-22 initiative.
The Galaxy failed to make the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2023.
Minnesota United re-signs veteran midfielder Wil Trapp
Wil Trapp will remain a Minnesota United player for 2024.
The veteran midfielder re-signed with the Loons on a one-year deal, the club announced Thursday. Trapp’s contract also includes a club option for 2025.
The Ohio native has made 98 appearances with the Loons across all competitions since arriving in January 2021. He’s scored one goal and provided four assists for Minnesota United, providing an experienced presence in midfield.
Trapp previously spent time with Inter Miami and the Columbus Crew in MLS. During his time in Columbus, Trapp was named an MLS All-Star in 2016 and 2013 U.S. Soccer Young Male Athlete of the Year.
He has totaled over 300 appearances in MLS to date.

- The Columbus Crew signed goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen on a one-year deal through 2024. Hagen has played in Israel, Hungary, and his native Guatemala at club level, while also earning 34 caps for the national team. He joins Patrick Schulte and Evan Bush in the Crew goalkeeping ranks.
- The Philadelphia Union signed forward Chris Donovan through the 2025 season. Donovan, a Drexel University standout, has spent the last two seasons between the Union’s first and second teams. He was the only Union player to score in four different competitions last year.
