Monfils, 39, Announces Plans to Retire Following the 2026 Season

Gael Monfils, the charismatic French tennis star and former world No. 6, has announced his intention to retire from professional tennis at the conclusion of the 2026 season. The news, shared via social media, comes as the 39-year-old reflects on an illustrious career that has spanned over two decades.

In his heartfelt message, Monfils expressed gratitude for his journey in the sport, which began when he first picked up a racket at just two and a half years old. He turned professional at the age of 18 and has enjoyed countless memorable moments throughout his time on tour. “The opportunity to turn my passion into a profession is a privilege I have cherished during every match and moment,” Monfils stated. He conveyed a sense of acceptance about his decision to retire, emphasizing his peace with stepping away from the game that has defined his life.

With an impressive record that includes 13 ATP titles, Monfils’s career highlights also feature two semifinal appearances at prestigious Grand Slam events—the 2008 French Open and the 2016 US Open. Currently ranked 53rd in the ATP standings, Monfils candidly acknowledged that despite coming close, he has not captured a Grand Slam title. However, he stated that he holds no regrets and feels fortunate to have competed during a golden era of tennis, sharing the court with legends such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.

Monfils’s announcement marks the end of an era for French tennis, as he is the last active member of the renowned group known as “The Musketeers,” which includes fellow players Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon, and Richard Gasquet. His legacy in the sport is highlighted by his recent achievement in January, when he became the oldest player to win an ATP Tour title in Auckland, New Zealand, at the age of 38 years and 132 days, surpassing Federer’s previous record.

Outside of tennis, Monfils has built a life with Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina, whom he married in 2021. The couple now parents a young daughter, adding a new chapter to Monfils’s life away from the court. In his touching farewell message, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to his fans: “To every person who ever cheered or shouted ‘Allez, Gael!’ in real life or at a TV screen: your energy and love are truly everything to me.”

As he prepares for the final season of his career, tennis enthusiasts and fans eagerly anticipate Monfils’s farewell tour, celebrating the vibrant flair and passion he has brought to the sport throughout his remarkable journey.
