Main draw action kicks off on Sunday at the Monte Carlo Masters. Four first-round singles were played across Court Rainier III and Court Des Princes in the country, alongside the final qualifying matches.
First to play was Jan-Lennard Struff, who used his power to recover from 1-6 2-5 down take out the sturdy Sebastian Baez in three sets.
Borna Coric then dispatched sixteenth seed Sascha Bublik, dropping just two games before Tallon Griekspoor fought his way past Dominic Koepfer.
The Kazakh wasn’t the only seed to fall as Lorenzo Musetti took out 13th-seeded Taylor Fritz, with the Italian looking more at ease with the slow conditions that suit his spinny baseline game.

Coric Wipes Out Bublik
Clay is not a surface that Sascha Bublik performs well on, especially not the slow stuff in Monte Carlo. He was promptly removed from the draw by Borna Coric, who cruised to a 6-1 6-1 win.
It was a typical low-effort performance by Bublik, who played like a man destined for defeat from the first point. Yes, it’s the odd piece of entertainment with his idiosyncratic game style, but overall, it’s not good value for money.
I was feeling very good on the court and pleased with my performance. I was not serving that well on my serve, but with everything else, I was extremely happy. And the first match on clay is not easy, so I am extremely happy to be through. Coric on his win.
Musetti Topples Fritz
Lorenzo Musetti has fond memories of Monte Carlo, having beaten Djokovic at the Country Club last year and he’s well-versed in playing on the clay.
Based on that, it was a surprise to see him as a slight underdog against Taylor Fritz, but he took out the American 6-4 6-4 in 1 hour and 24 minutes.
The 13th-seed hasn’t had the best time of late, even on his preferred hard courts, so I always felt he’d struggle against Musetti’s game style.
While comfortable, Musetti wasn’t dominant, and both sets were topsy-turvy affairs. Musetti broke four times across both sets, and Fritz broke twice in a somewhat scrappy match.
