Tsitipas Takes Down Sinner

tsitsipas monte carlo

Stefanos Tsitsipas is one step closer to winning his third title in Monte Carlo after a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over world number 2 Jannik Sinner.

In a match marked by intense rallies and powerful strokes, Tsitsipas rallied from a 2-4 deficit in the decisive set, showing his mental fortitude on the clay. The win earned him a return to the top 10 in the ATP rankings.

The match started with the Greek dominant on serve, winning 13 of 14 points behind his first delivery in the opening set. His rally ball was heavy, preventing Sinner from really being able to attack it.

However, Sinner was able to turn it around quickly in set two. The Italian took his forehand up a notch, breaking in the second game of the second set and maintaining that advantage.

Tsitsipas was still present, holding six break points across the set, but Sinner could effectively pressure his backhand, and he took it 6-3.

The third started in the same fashion as the second, with Sinner breaking Tsitsipas in his first service game, and with the wind fully in his sails, the match appeared to be his as he raced into a 4-1 lead.

In the fifth game, Sinner’s double break looked inevitable. Yet somehow, the chair umpire sensationally missed an obvious double fault from Tsitsipas, and the 12th seed managed to escape the game.

That was the start of the turnaround as Sinner struggled with an injury sustained in the 7th game.

After a medical timeout, Tsitsipas began his charge, breaking back for 4-4 and capturing the next two games to seal his best win of the season so far.

Did that poor line call change the outcome of the match? Probably, so Tsitsipas can count himself lucky.

It was tennis at its highest level that I have been able to play. Jannik was an extremely difficult opponent and can be seen throughout the year. He has been very consistent, and I could see that throughout today with his game. He is one of the toughest opponents I have faced so far, and to find ways when there weren’t that many, I am proud of that. He gave me a very difficult game, and the way I overcame it was true excellence. Tsitsipas on his win over Sinner.

Ruud Dumps Out Djokovic

ruud monte carlo

Casper Ruud had never won a set against Djokovic in their five previous meetings, but he found something extra on Saturday, securing a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 victory against the world number one.

The Norwegian played a very steady match. After dropping the second set 1-6, he stayed composed and did not get swept away by Djokovic’s momentum. He was there to take advantage when the Serb started making costly errors.

Djokovic went from sublime to wild too frequently. He came up with some brilliant play to break back in the third set but then went off the boil in the last few games, sealing his fate with a double fault.

He leaves Monte Carlo having won more points and more games in the match, and the stats suggest he was stronger on serve, on return and at the net.

However, the tennis scoring system can often be about timing, and it was evident from his execution that he wasn’t in the mood to grind it out from the baseline, hitting his forehand at average speeds of 125km/h, which meant while he dominated large parts of the action, he also hit 22 unforced errors in the process, many of which came at crucial moments, especially in the last two games of the third set.

I am super happy. This is a day I will remember for a long time. I have never beaten a World No. 1, and I have never beaten Novak. I am very, very happy. I am a little bit in a state of shock right now. I was up in the third, and he came back, typical of how good these guys are under pressure. And I was thinking, please don’t let this slip away, and 0/40 in the last game, it is not done. When he missed the first serve at 30/40, he saved so many break points in crazy ways, with huge second serves. I prayed one time, let it be a double fault, and something above listened; of course, it was unfortunate to end the match with a double fault, but for me, it was nice to see that ball sail long. Ruud on Djokovic’s double fault helping him over the line.
