Tabilo Tops Wawrinka
There’ll be no Djokovic vs Wawrinka in Monte Carlo as Alejandro Tabilo prevailed in a topsy-turvy battle against the Swiss, recording a 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 in an entertaining match on Court Rainier III at the Principality.
The 27-year-old Chilean, who lost a heartbreaker to Jenson Brooksby in Houston last week, hasn’t had a good time on clay recently but showed resilience to fight back and despite squandering a 5-3 lead in the decider, he sealed the win on his third match point after two hours and 34 minutes.
Wawrinka, the 2014 champion making his 15th Monte-Carlo appearance, looked sharp early, overpowering Tabilo with his trademark heavy groundstrokes. However, as the match progressed, Tabilo held firm at 6-5, converting his third match point with a pinpoint forehand that left Wawrinka stranded.
Medvedev Advances
Daniil Medvedev, who hasn’t looked much like a hard-court specialist in recent months, shook off his Miami loss with a gritty 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Karen Khachanov.
Medvedev, now out of the top 10 in the rankings but boasting a 7-2 head-to-head record against his compatriot, raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set. However, Khachanov, a formidable opponent on clay, clawed his way back to level at 5-5 before Medvedev steadied the ship and snatched the set 7-5.
The second set followed a similar script with Medvedev surging to a 4-1 lead, only for Khachanov to win most of the extended rallies, taking the set 6-4.
In the third, Medvedev found an extra gear, mixing consistent baseline hitting with clever drop shots to edge ahead. He broke at 4-4 and served out the match 6-4.
Following his win, Medvedev received treatment for cramps in his thigh at the net but managed to close out the last few points successfully.
Other Matches of Note
Jiri Lehecka, returning from injury that plagued his last clay swing, looked sharp in a 6-3, 7-6(7) victory over Sebastian Korda. He’ll now face Lorenzo Musetti, who mounted a comeback against Buyunchaokete, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Gael Monfils continues to impress, securing a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over qualifier Fabian Marozsan. Monfils is now 6-2 at Masters 1000 events in 2025, advancing to face seventh seed Andrey Rublev.
Daniel Altmaier ousted 16th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, winning 7-6(5), 6-3. Altmaier will now meet Richard Gasquet after his win over Arnaldi.
Matteo Berrettini made a solid start, dispatching Argentine clay specialist Mariano Navone 6-4, 6-4, while Marcos Giron extended his head-to-head against Denis Shapovalov to 3-1, winning 6-3, 7-6(5).
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina battled back to defeat 11th seed Ben Shelton 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1, using his heavy topspin and relentless defense to dominate in the latter stages of the match.
