Montpellier | Bublik becomes a two-time champion

Montpellier | Bublik becomes a two-time champion

Alexander Bublik not only won the fourth title of his career, but the Open Sud de France title for a second time and joins an illustrious list of players who have previously achieved that in the 37-year history of the event, like Cedric Pioline, Tommy Haas, Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet.

The Kazak, seeded two for the week, also made a history by becoming the first player to win an ATP Tour event after losing the first set in all his matches — including the final which he won 5-7 6-2 6-3!

“I was on the verge of losing in my opening round, now here I am standing with the title. Thank you to the crowd for supporting me throughout the week,” Bublik said after lifting the trophy he also won in 2022,

“Maybe if I continue playing like this, I will have more of my pictures here (in the arena), so I’m really happy.”

Bublik blew a 4-1 lead in the first set to give the fourth-seeded Borna Coric of Croatia hopes of clinching his fourth career title and first indoors.

But 26-year-old Russian born Kazak’s big serve struck 19 aces to help him dominate with his serve.

Bublik will now jump four places to reach a career-high of 23rd when the latest ATP rankings are released on Monday.
