As the first round of the Open Occitanie wraps up in Montpellier, all eyes will be on Stan Wawrinka as he prepares to face rising star Hamad Medjedovic. Also in action is Aleksandar Kovacevic, who looks to build on his impressive performance from last year as he takes on qualifier Moise Kouame.
In the matchup between Wawrinka and Medjedovic, both players are unseeded, making this an intriguing encounter. Wawrinka, a stalwart of the ATP circuit, is coming off a noteworthy appearance at the Australian Open, where he fought valiantly to reach the third round before falling to Taylor Fritz. However, at 40 years old, the Swiss veteran may still be feeling the physical toll from several grueling matches.
Conversely, Medjedovic, who experienced an early exit at the Australian Open against Alex de Minaur, has already made his mark with an impressive 40 wins on indoor hard courts in his burgeoning career. His achievements include clinching the NextGen ATP Finals title last year, and at just 22, he could very well have the edge if this match stretches into three sets.
In a separate match, Kovacevic, who made headlines in Montpellier last year with a stunning run to the final, faces a formidable challenge against 16-year-old Kouame. Kovacevic’s journey last season saw him qualify for the main draw, topple Andrey Rublev in the semifinals, and eventually secure a place in the final, where he narrowly lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime. Despite a rocky start to this season, where he holds a modest 1-3 record in his last three tournaments, his experience in high-pressure situations may serve him well.
Kouame, on the other hand, has been in superb form, boasting a perfect 12-0 record to kick off the year, including two Futures titles on indoor hard courts. The teenager’s qualifying victories against Elias Ymer and Clement Chidekh have marked a significant step forward in his young career. However, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Kovacevic, who must navigate the added pressure of defending finalist points against a player who is significantly younger and less experienced on this stage.
As these first-round matches unfold, both Wawrinka and Kovacevic will aim to progress further into the tournament, while Medjedovic and Kouame look to upset the odds and make their mark in Montpellier.
