Montpellier: Qualifiers Damm and Droguet Storm into Semifinals

In an exciting turn of events at the Open Occitanie 250 in Montpellier, two qualifiers, Martin Damm and Titouan Droguet, have made a remarkable impact by advancing to the semifinals. This achievement highlights both players’ potential as they reach the last four in this prestigious tournament, marking the best performances of their careers thus far.

Martin Damm, an American emerging star, showcased his powerful serve to secure a straight-sets victory against Italy’s Luca Nardi, winning 6-3, 7-6(8). Damm’s journey to this point has been nothing short of thrilling; he saved a match point during the qualifying rounds and has since defeated two former Top 10 players, Hubert Hurkacz and Roberto Bautista Agut, in the main draw. Serving 16 aces during his match against Nardi and facing no break points added to the intensity of his performance.

Reflecting on his match, Damm expressed the nerves that accompany high-stakes competition. “For sure it was a bit nerve-wracking today, a lot on the line. I knew that if we went three sets, then maybe it would get a little bit tricky for me. I’m happy that I’m tall and I have a pretty good serve, so thanks to my parents!” As he moves forward, Damm will compete against French veteran Adrian Mannarino, who is returning to form after a two-year hiatus from the semifinals. Mannarino reached this stage by overcoming qualifier Arthur Gea, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Titouan Droguet continued his impressive run by defeating the tournament’s fourth seed, Tallon Griekspoor, in a tight contest that ended with both sets going to tiebreaks, 7-6(5), 7-6(1). Droguet dominated the serve game, firing off an incredible 21 aces while facing no break points, a testament to his growing confidence on the court. He acknowledged the challenge of playing on such a prominent stage, saying, “I’m not used to playing on big courts like this. So I’m trying to not look up there, looking only at the court and my team, to stay focused.”

The 24-year-old Droguet will seek to harness the energy of the home crowd as he faces top seed and defending champion Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals. Auger-Aliassime has shown his own prowess in the tournament, following a strong opening match against Stan Wawrinka with a decisive 6-4, 6-2 win against sixth seed Arthur Fils on Friday.

As the semifinals approach, the stage is set for an exhilarating battle between promising newcomers and established stars, capturing the essence of professional tennis and the unpredictability that makes it so compelling. This tournament in Montpellier is proving to be a pivotal moment for Damm and Droguet as they aim to further elevate their rankings and solidify their places in the sport.
