Montpellier: Wawrinka Proves He's Still Got the Competitive Fire

Stan Wawrinka, the celebrated Swiss tennis player and three-time Grand Slam champion, is now navigating the final chapter of his illustrious career at the age of 40. Despite being in the twilight years of his professional journey, Wawrinka continuing to impress, showcasing his skills against the newer generation of competitors.

Wawrinka, who received a wildcard entry into the Australian Open, made a notable appearance by advancing to the third round. He continued that momentum by defeating Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia in the opening round of the Open Occitanie, a 250-level indoor tournament taking place in Montpellier, with a score of 7-6(3), 6-4. This win set up a highly anticipated clash with the tournament’s top seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, for a shot at reaching the quarter-finals.

Reflecting on his passion for the game, Wawrinka stated, “It was important to keep pushing myself and trying to win as much as possible. I always enjoy [it].” This encapsulates his relentless drive and affection for tennis, even as he approaches retirement.

In his match against the 22-year-old Medjedovic, Wawrinka’s experience shone through as he adeptly utilized his serve and tactical prowess to secure a straight-sets victory in 98 minutes. Post-match, he expressed his joy in competing against the younger generation, noting, “It is always a pleasure to play the young generation… Tough player. I am happy with the level. It is a pleasure to be back here.”

Another notable participant in the tournament was 16-year-old Moise Kouame, who made waves by successfully qualifying for the main draw. In his ATP tour debut, Kouame displayed considerable talent, pushing the eighth seeded American Aleksandar Kovacevic to three sets before ultimately falling short.

Kovacevic, a finalist in the previous year’s Montpellier event, ultimately triumphed with a score of 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-2 in a match that lasted one hour and 54 minutes. He acknowledged Kouame’s strong performance, stating, “He was outplaying me in the first set… I didn’t feel super comfortable, first match of the week… but definitely impressed.”

Kovacevic will next face French qualifier Titouan Droguet, who recently overcame Kovacevic in a Challenger event, setting the stage for an intriguing rematch.

The quarter-finals have begun to take shape, with several players securing their spots. Adrian Mannarino achieved an impressive upset over the fifth-seeded Ugo Humbert, saving three match points en route to a 7-6(4), 6-4, 7-6(4) victory in an all-French encounter. Mannarino will next take on fellow French competitor Arthur Gea, who advanced after Tomas Machac retired during their match at 6-3, 4-5.

In a standout performance, Martin Damm, a qualifier from the United States, dominated veteran Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut with a commanding score of 6-1, 6-3, further illustrating the diverse talent on display in Montpellier.

As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on Wawrinka’s upcoming match, as fans anticipate whether the veteran can continue to challenge the younger players and extend his final season with memorable performances.
