Patrick Mouratoglou is not a fan of Emma Raducanu‘s management of her coaching team and has advised the Briton to find stability in her coaching appointments.
They always say that you don’t need to fix it if it’s not broken, but Raducanu has never paid attention to those words. The 21-year-old and her father have a philosophy in which they take total control of coaching decisions, according to Raducanu’s agent, Max Eisenbud.
Because of her chopping and changing methods, Raducanu has never stayed with a coach long enough to sustain her results. She has been heavily criticized for this coaching carousel that has been going on for the last three years, with former British tennis legend Ann Jones leading the choir.
Mouratoglou, one of the foremost tennis minds, has shared his thoughts on Raducanu’s decision-making. The French coach believes Raducanu’s problems (both form and injury) are directly impacted by the high turnover of coaches.
He notes that because she doesn’t have stability in her camp, it is impossible to build something. The fact that the former US Open champion is comfortable with ringing the changes regularly is what makes Mouratoglou pessimistic about her hopes of working on any project.
“If (Emma Raducanu) was my daughter, I wouldn’t advise her to do that, because you need stability to build something, whatever it is. And even more in tennis, I think it’s very important to have a project for your tennis and to follow day after day, the road to achieve what your project, your tennis project is.”
“So whenever there are changes in terms of coaches, there are the project changes. So you cannot build something. And also you need stability. The tour is the most unstable thing on the planet. Everything changes every week. It’s pretty tough emotionally to handle all those changes.”
In under two years, Raducanu has fired five coaches and stopped working with Sebastian Sachs in June, less than six months since they began working together. Mouratoglou does not deny Raducanu’s talents but states she needs to find someone she trusts and appoint that person with a long-term view.
“So if you have changes also with your team, then it’s too much. So I wish for her that she finds someone that she trusts enough to be able to keep the team for long enough to achieve something, because the potential we know she has, she’s proven it by winning a Grand Slam.”
“But since this happened, nothing has been consistent. I think the results and the injuries are the consequence of this instability that she has had within her team.”
