Britain’s No 2 Jack Draper produced another impressive performance to recover from a set down to reach the last eight of the BMW Open in Munich, on a day when rain disrupted the schedule allowing only two matches to be completed.
In the second and third, the sun came out and I started feeling better. I’m really proud of how I played. Jack Draper
Draper defeated Germany’s wild card Rudolf Molleker 4-6 6-1 6-1 to reach the quarter finals emphatically.
The 22-year-old Brit lost the opening set but came back from a rain delay, renewed with energy and aggression, to sweep his opponent aside for the loss of just two games.
“He played an amazing level in the first set. The conditions were very rainy and slow, so it was tough to come out and play a certain way,” Draper said following his win.
“In the second and third, the sun came out and I started feeling better. I’m really proud of how I played.
“You’ve got to take whatever comes at you. It’s a real challenge for both players and we both had to mentally stay good.”
At first it was Molleker who handled the heavy conditions better and usually emerged the winner of long rallies with Draper keeping abreast until the fifth game when he offered up a break point which the German immediately converted to lead 3-2.
Play was suspended for 45-minutes for rain ahead of the second set but on the players return, it was Draper who started to outhit Molleker, breaking for 3-1 following some excellent net play and continued to press to level the match after 26-minutes.
A break at the start of the deciding set ensured Draper became favourite to progress and he carried the momentum for the remainder of the match by rattling off four games in a row to beat Molleker in front of his home crowd.
A major delay followed before the top seeded Alexander Zverev was able to complete his opening match against a tricky Austrian, Jurij Rodionov 7-6(3) 6-2. His match suffered two rain delays and once completed there was no chance of any further matches being played.
