Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu will play mixed doubles together for the first and only time at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, and the draw has been revealed.
The mixed doubles tournament at the All England Club will begin on Friday, July 5th, and will feature 32 teams. Murray and Raducanu have been granted a wild card at the event in what will be the 37-year-old former World No. 1’s last Wimbledon appearance.
In the opening match, they will play Argentina’s Marcelo Arevalo and China’s Shuai Zhang. Raducanu answered Murray’s call for a mixed doubles union, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The 21-year-old former US Open champion is also competing in singles, and she has reached the third round without dropping a set with victories over Renata Zarazua and Elise Mertens. She will play ninth seed Maria Sakkari next for a spot in the second week.
Murray will retire this summer, although it is unknown whether he will play at the Olympics. He withdrew from his singles campaign at Wimbledon on the day he was slated to face Tomas Machac in the first round because he had not yet recovered from a back injury.
The Scot went under the knife shortly after retiring at Queen’s, throwing his involvement in his last Wimbledon in major doubt. Initially, it was thought he had withdrawn from the tournament altogether, but his camp refuted those reports and gave him every possible chance of playing.
The three-time Grand Slam champion, who will also play doubles with brother Jamie on Thursday, has persuaded fellow Brit and WTA star Raducanu to team up with him in mixed doubles.
Doubles will be less demanding for his body even though Murray was willing “to risk” his future health for one more Wimbledon, and it’s probably a wise decision, especially if he intends to compete at the Olympics in Paris later this month.
