After scoring a pretty solid win over David Goffin in Indian Wells, Andy Murray scored a good win over Matteo Berrettini at the 2024 Miami Open.
The Brit announced that he would be retiring this summer, but even if he’s doing that, and we don’t know when exactly it will happen, he is still out there trying his best.
His performance against Berrettini was a pretty good show of resilience against a player who is not playing badly, as he came back at the ATP Challenger tournament in Phoenix, where he reached the final.
Berrettini made the Arizona Tennis Classic final in his first week back, and while he didn’t win the trophy, the Italian remained healthy, which is what matters most. In this match, the Italian was up on Murray early, taking the first set 6-4.
It came mostly behind a solid serving performance, which made things quite easy for him. The Italian hit his first serve 78% of the time and dropped only a handful of points behind it.
He saved both break points and endured some aggressive play from Murray, who misfired a bit too often, making eight unforced errors. The second set flipped considerably, as it was a perfect set from the former world no. 1, literally.
He finished with 11 winners and 0 unforced errors, and he served sensationally all set long. Berrettini didn’t serve as well and immediately ran into problems because of it, and he also felt dizzy at the start of the eighth game, getting his blood pressure checked as a result.
He allowed three break points, and Murray converted one of those, which was enough for the 6-3 finish. That good momentum carried over into the final set, where Murray took an early 2-0 lead.
He was still serving impeccably, while Berrettini greatly struggled on his own serve. If he didn’t hit his first serve, the Italian was bound to lose the point as Murray just cracked the code.
He was all over his opponent, only narrowly missing out on taking a 4-1 lead. The Brit would keep his composure and finish off the match, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 despite facing a 0-40 deficit at 3-2.
