Musetti Exits Golden Swing; Alcaraz and Zverev Pull Out of Rotterdam Event

Lorenzo Musetti’s promising run at the Australian Open abruptly came to an end due to a groin injury, forcing the Italian star to withdraw from the upcoming Golden Swing in South America. Musetti had put forth a stunning performance, taking a two-set lead against the legendary Novak Djokovic in their quarterfinal clash before being unable to continue the match due to his injury.

In light of his situation, Musetti announced via social media his decision to skip the ATP 250 tournament in Buenos Aires and the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro, both of which take place on clay courts. “After the results of my medical examinations and tests, my team and I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the upcoming tournaments,” he wrote. “My focus right now is on my rehabilitation so I can return to the court. Thank you to everyone for their support, and I hope to see you soon.”

As Musetti takes time to recover, the tennis calendar remains bustling with events next week, including competitions in Buenos Aires, Dallas, and Rotterdam. The Rotterdam tournament, notwithstanding a strong lineup, will not see the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, who have both pulled out recently.

Alcaraz, fresh off his recent triumph at the Australian Open where he achieved the feat of completing a career Grand Slam, has opted for a break. Meanwhile, Zverev withdrew citing an ankle issue. The German, currently ranked fourth globally, expressed his disappointment, stating, “I find it incredibly unfortunate that I have to make this decision. At the ABN AMRO Open, I was already given a chance as a young player, and that’s why I always enjoy returning. However, given my history with my ankle, I have to prioritize my recovery and can’t take any risks. I wish everyone in Rotterdam a wonderful week.”

Despite the withdrawals of Alcaraz and Zverev, the Rotterdam draw remains notable, featuring top competitors such as Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Bublik, Daniil Medvedev, Arthur Fils, Karen Khachanov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Hubert Hurkacz. As the ATP calendar unfolds, tennis fans will keenly anticipate the return of Musetti and observe how the absence of Alcaraz and Zverev impacts the competitive landscape.
