Musetti Retires from Match Against Djokovic While Down Two Sets

Novak Djokovic has experienced a peculiar stretch at the Australian Open, navigating the tournament without winning a set since Saturday. Nonetheless, he is set to face off against Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. Djokovic advanced to this stage after receiving a walkover in the fourth round against Jakub Mensik, followed by an unexpected quarterfinal where Lorenzo Musetti retired while holding a two-set lead. The match ended with Djokovic set to lose, 6-4, 6-3, 1-3, when Musetti was forced to stop due to a troubling groin injury.

The later match of the day saw Jannik Sinner dominate Ben Shelton, securing a straightforward victory with set scores of 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Reflecting on the unfortunate circumstances of his match, Djokovic expressed genuine concern for Musetti during an on-court interview. “I don’t know what to say except I feel really sorry for him, as he was playing exceptionally well. To be leading two sets to love and then have to retire is really unfortunate. I wish him a swift recovery,” he remarked.

Musetti conveyed his own disappointment, saying, “I never imagined leading two sets against Novak and then having to retire. Having a match like that slip away due to injury is really painful.”

Looking ahead, the semifinals are set to feature both Sinner against Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz facing off with Alexander Zverev, promising an exciting continuation of the tournament.
