Myles Turner surprised many fans this offseason by making the switch from the Indiana Pacers to the Milwaukee Bucks, but the center explained that his choice was driven by a desire to be part of a competitive team.
“In the end, it was all about maintaining competitiveness,” Turner stated at his introductory press conference in Las Vegas on Friday. “Two years ago, the Pacers reached the Eastern Conference Finals, and last year we made it to the NBA Finals. Experiencing that level of winning fundamentally changed how I view this league, and I saw an opportunity to stay competitive here. Jon [Horst] and Doc [Rivers] both assured me that winning is the primary focus for us, and our visions align perfectly.”
The Bucks took many by surprise when they managed to create enough salary cap space for Turner.
Milwaukee opted to waive and stretch Damian Lillard’s contract to make room after Indiana reportedly undervalued Turner during negotiations due to concerns over the luxury tax.
“I was tired of constantly taking elbows and shoulders to my chest,” Turner joked. “It’s rare to play alongside someone of his caliber. Giannis is a generational talent—arguably one of the greatest ever to grace the game. I expect we’ll have some discussions in the upcoming weeks. I’ve faced Giannis for a long time, and I’m very familiar with his game. I see a smooth fit between us. He can push the pace, get out in transition, and create opportunities for others. His jumper has evolved, and defensively, he’s incredible. I think we’ll mesh quite well together.”
Bucks head coach Doc Rivers, who joined Turner at the press conference, also addressed concerns regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the team.
“Giannis approached me the day after the season ended, and we were already discussing next year’s plans,” Rivers said. “There’s much more speculation outside of Milwaukee than there is within the organization. Giannis loves being in Milwaukee. We have a strong relationship, and it’s been a positive one. We’re in constant communication, focusing on the upcoming season and how we can win.”
