Rafael Nadal will make a highly-anticipated and awaited comeback in 2024, and many ask the question of whether it will be his last season on the ATP Tour.
Initially, when the Spanish player announced that he would miss the 2023 Roland Garros and undergo surgery, it seemed that the 2024 season would be his last among professionals.
But as time went on, the Spanish player said multiple times that if his body holds up, he may continue playing even after the 2024 season.
Recently, he returned home from a practice camp in Kuwait, and after arriving home, his coach, Carlos Moya, who was present with Nadal in Kuwait, spoke to ATPTour.com.
Similarly to Nadal, Moya didn’t want to say that the 2024 season would be Nadal’s last, as according to the 47-year-old, the 22-time Grand Slam champion “doesn’t want to close the door.”
“That’s what I’m saying: leaving a sport that you’ve done all your life, that gets you hooked by that special adrenaline, is very complicated. He doesn’t want to close the door.”
According to Moya, if everything goes well, his protege may continue playing, but at this moment, it’s difficult to determine whether that will be the case.
“If everything goes well, and he endures, why not continue? If he enjoys it, has a good time and it’s what he likes to do, why not? But there are too many unknowns right now to say where we will be in a year. Anything can happen.”
Asked whether he’s still surprised by something Nadal does, Moya said that with greats such as the Spaniard, you can’t be surprised, and that’s the case with the 22-time major winner.
“You can’t be surprised by anything. You really can’t be surprised at all. The truth is that being with him I have seen unthinkable and otherworldly things and why not? He is still Rafa Nadal, we know which player we are with.”
