Rafael Nadal is returning to tennis, but he’s unsure about the level he’ll be able to reach, but it’s not what he cares about.
Nadal would never return to the sport if he didn’t feel like he could be competitive. It’s a pretty straightforward idea because what’s the point in returning to the everyday grind unless he can achieve what he wants?
While belief is one thing, reality is another. He’s alluded in the past few months that there is a chance that the comeback might not go well, which is him simply being his realistic self.
We’ll see what happens in about a month, but for now, Nadal is just glad to return and see what happens.
I don’t know to what extent, I don’t know what to expect. I have no idea, but I don’t care right now. I’m just happy to be back and with the maximum enthusiasm to make whatever effort is necessary to have fun and, I believe, be competitive.
As we all know, Nadal is a really competitive player who trains really hard. It’s been a staple of his pretty much for the entirety of his career, and the hope is that it pays off.
He picked Brisbane International as an event he knows from the past and that’s the level he’s comfortable starting at.
I’ve been training well, reaching a level that allows me the possibility to compete again. I’ve gone through many phases in the past, but today I think it’s the right time to return to a tournament that I’ve played in before, one that is familiar to me—a 250-level tournament. I know it’s a tough tournament, but I hope to be prepared to compete. Nothing else matters to me, just being competitive.
His uncle is backing him for a successful return but we’ll see. There are no guarantees in tennis.
