Monday’s action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California featured a stunning upset when lucky loser Luca Nardi ousted world No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Needing two hours and 21 minutes to advance, Nardi will next face No. 17 seed Tommy Paul.
Djokovic was playing in Indian Wells for the first time since 2019.
Earlier in the day, Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the fourth round, defeating Emma Raducanu 6-3, 7-5.
Sabalenka will next face either Elina Svitolina or Emma Navarro.
Elsewhere, No. 3 seed Coco Gauff, No. 11 Daria Kasatkina, No. 24 Elise Mertens and Yue Yuan all reach the final 16.
On the men’s side, No. 7 seed Holger Rune poured in an impressive performance against Lorenzo Musetti, ousting the Italian 6-2, 7-6(5).
The Dane will take on former champion Taylor Fritz for a place in the quarterfinals. Fritz made quick work of inform Argentine Sebastian Baez, 6-2, 6-2.
Other winners on the day saw No. 9 seed Casper Ruud, No. 13 Grigor Dimitrov, No. 17 seed Tommy Paul and Gael Monfils all reached the fourth-round.
Tuesday’s schedule of play in Palm Spring will feature Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Angelique Kerber.
