NBA free agent Cameron Payne was arrested early Friday morning in Scottsdale, Arizona, for reportedly giving police officers a false report and refusing to give his name, TMZ Sports says.
“According to the Scottsdale Police Department, authorities were called out to investigate a disturbance in Scottsdale at around 2:44 AM — and came into contact with Payne and another individual,” TMZ said.
“It’s unclear exactly what happened next — cops did not give any further specific details — although the SPD says Payne was arrested on the scene and booked on one charge of refusal to provide a truthful name and one count of false report to law enforcement.
“We’re told the 29-year-old NBA player was released from custody a short time later.”
Payne has ties to Arizona, since he played for the Suns from 2019-23.
This season in February, Milwaukee traded Payne to Philadelphia with a second-round pick for Patrick Beverley.
He played 31 regular season games with the Sixers, where he averaged 9.3 points and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 38 percent from three-point range.
Philly played in the early rounds of the playoffs and Payne featured in five of those games, averaging 5.3 points and shooting 44 percent from three.
The guard is set to be a free agent over the summer, though it is being reported that the 76ers may be interested in re-signing him as a backup point guard for Tyrese Maxey.
Throughout his nine-year NBA career, the journeyman has played for the Thunder, Bulls, Cavaliers, Bucks and 76ers.
