NBA Icon Criticizes Nikola Jokic for Dominating Steve Kerr in Olympics

Despite Team USA’s gold medal victory in the previous Paris Olympic Games, they faced tough challenges from European powerhouses Serbia and France. The United States showcased incredible fourth-quarter performances to secure victories against these formidable opponents.

The U.S. men’s national team, despite winning all seven matches, did not display overwhelming dominance, with two close matches against Nikola Jokic’s Serbian squad. The Nuggets star, who secured his third NBA MVP award, posed a significant threat to the American team in both encounters.

Noticing these close calls, basketball pundits took note, including Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson who criticized Steve Kerr’s coaching tactics on the All the Smoke Podcast with Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes. The 85-year-old legend questioned Kerr’s strategies.

Robertson criticized the American team’s defensive lapses, particularly against Jokic, questioning Kerr’s decisions. Kerr acknowledged the challenge of facing Jokic and emphasized the need to stay vigilant despite previous victories.

With the plan to deploy three All-Star centers to contain Jokic, including Anthony Davis, Joel Embiid, and Bam Adebayo, Kerr aimed to wear down the Serbian center. Robertson, known for his stellar NBA career, voiced his concerns about the tactics employed.

Jokic’s Motivation from International Competition

Following his stint with the Serbian national team and their Olympic bronze medal, Jokic highlighted the impact of representing his country on his return to the NBA. He reflected on how his previous international experience coincided with an NBA title win.

“Last time I played for the national team, we won a championship. Maybe that means something, maybe it doesn’t. Most players believe a summer tournament helps maintain fitness. I’m not sure about that, but I enjoyed the experience and believe I’ve grown as a player. Whether it translates to my current performance, only time will tell,” shared the MVP.

In a preseason game against the Celtics, Jokic impressed despite the Nuggets’ loss. His coach, Mike Malone, praised his all-around brilliance and impact on the game, acknowledging both his offensive and defensive contributions.
