Bulgarian tennis is witnessing a promising new generation, with two standout athletes emerging from the junior circuit. In a thrilling championship match at the Boy’s Junior US Open, it was Ivan Ivanov who secured victory over fellow Bulgarian Alexander Vasiley, underscoring his status as a rising star in the sport.
The 16-year-old Ivanov, the tournament’s top seed, showcased his exceptional talent by defeating Vasiley in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, within a compact 74-minute match. This performance included a remarkable display of power and precision, as Ivanov recorded 19 winners and successfully broke his opponent’s serve five times out of nine opportunities.
Reflecting on his achievement, Ivanov expressed his joy at not only winning but also at the opportunity to compete in an all-Bulgarian final, embraced by a supportive crowd. “I played great, and our thoughts came through. Meeting Alexander in the final was quite special. I am thrilled about how everything unfolded today,” he shared.
Ivanov also acknowledged the pressure Vasiley exerted during the match, especially as moments intensified. “He came back strong and started applying more pressure, which I definitely felt. I aimed to keep those stressful moments brief, and thankfully, I succeeded in doing so. When it was 5-all, I managed to break back and then hold my serve, which was crucial,” he said.
This victory marks Ivanov’s place in tennis history as he becomes only the third boy in this century to win both Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year, joining the ranks of notable players including Grigor Dimitrov and Filip Peliwo. His triumph has propelled him to the top ranking in the junior category.
Ivanov highlighted the significance of the tournament, saying, “Being in such a vibrant city with a massive stadium, coupled with an engaging crowd, makes this event truly special.”
Training at the esteemed Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, Ivanov received personal congratulations from the legendary Rafael Nadal, who recognized him on social media for his remarkable achievements.
As both Ivanov and Vasiley prepare for their future in professional tennis, the sport looks forward to the potential these athletes represent for Bulgarian tennis on the global stage.
