The New York Knicks have been touted as winners of the offseason by many NBA insiders, despite trading away a significant package for Mikal Bridges. The team appears poised for a deep playoff run next season. However, they suffered a setback by losing Isaiah Hartenstein to the Oklahoma City Thunder, leaving them thin in the frontcourt with Jericho Sims and Mitchell Robinson as the only centers on the roster, the latter of whom dealt with injuries last year. Consequently, the Knicks have set their sights on promising young talent from Utah, Walker Kessler. The Jazz, however, are reportedly seeking at least one first-round pick in exchange for the shot-blocking big man.
New York Knicks Interested in Trading for Utah Jazz Center, Walker Kessler
Walker Kessler’s Potential
Despite a decrease in playing time last season, Kessler remains a player with high potential as a premier shot-blocker and rim-protector. Over his two seasons, he has averaged 2.4 blocks per game, a block percentage of 8.9%, 8.0 total rebounds per game, and a total rebounding percentage of 18.8%. His rookie year particularly showcased his promise.
In that season, he posted averages of 9.2 points, 2.3 blocks, 8.4 total rebounds per game, and a remarkable field goal percentage of 72.0%. Standing at seven feet tall and weighing 245 pounds, Kessler excels in the paint, altering shots and deterring opponents. While not known for his outside shooting, his efficiency and defensive prowess would be valuable additions to the Knicks.
New York Looking to Fill a Void at the Center Position
Currently, the center position is the Knicks’ primary weakness. Jalen Brunson is a dark horse for next year’s MVP award, and Julius Randle is coming off another All-Star season. Additionally, Mikal Bridges and O.G. Anunoby offer three-and-D skills, while role players like Josh Hart have integrated well into the team. Acquiring a rim-protector like Walker Kessler in a potential trade could significantly bolster the Knicks’ chances of reaching the NBA Finals. Already considered among the favorites in the Eastern Conference for next season, the addition of Kessler would further enhance their prospects.
