Newcastle United is reportedly increasing its efforts to secure Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta amid competition from Tottenham.
The French forward has impressed during his stint at Selhurst Park, leading to speculation about a potential transfer this January.
According to Fabrizio Romano, “Jean-Philippe Mateta and his representatives have communicated their wish to leave Crystal Palace.” Discussions with both Aston Villa and Juventus have taken place, and Mateta is eager for a move this month, with the final decision resting with the club.
Crystal Palace Faces Tough Choice with Mateta
Crystal Palace has encountered considerable challenges lately, with their FA Cup-winning team from last season being significantly weakened.
Eberechi Eze, who netted the decisive goal in the FA Cup final, has since joined Arsenal, and club captain Marc Guehi has transferred to Manchester City this month. Additionally, manager Oliver Glasner has announced his departure at the end of the current contract this summer. Losing Mateta as well would be a substantial setback that the club cannot afford at this juncture.
Nevertheless, Mateta would undoubtedly strengthen the attack for teams like Tottenham, Newcastle, or Villa, all of whom are in need of a consistent goal scorer.
