When it comes to NBA arrest tapes, Cameron Payne’s stands out as one of the most amusing.
The New York Knicks guard was arrested in June in Scottsdale, Arizona for providing police officers with a false report and refusing to disclose his identity.
Police responded to reports of a verbal dispute between the 30-year-old and his girlfriend, only to discover Payne had actually called them himself.
Body camera footage from the Scottsdale Police Department shows Payne and his girlfriend both claiming everything was fine upon the officers’ arrival.
When asked for his name, Payne responded, “I don’t have to tell you my name. I’m okay.”
Following a back-and-forth exchange, Payne eventually provided the fake name ‘Terry Johnson’ along with a false birthday.
Despite warnings from the police, Payne stuck to the fabricated identity until finally conceding and admitting his deception.
As the officers placed him in handcuffs, one remarked, “That was the dumbest way to get arrested, man.”
Upon being taken to the squad car, Payne’s girlfriend attempted to justify his actions by claiming he goes by an alias in public due to being an NBA player.
Court records indicate Payne faces charges of obstruction—refusing to disclose true name and providing false information.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for November.
