NFL Analyst Robert Griffin III and Jay Gruden Go Viral After Late-Night Social Media Feud

Social media has opened up an entire world of possibilities for people and athletes alike. The chance to interact with your favorite athletes and celebrities is one positive of the internet, the other is being able to see former coaches and players hash out their differences live in real time.

Such is the case for former Washington Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III and his former head coach Jay Gruden.

Monday night provided us with a Philadelphia Eagles beat down at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That domination on both sides of the ball gave us an interesting exchange between a former NFL player and coach.

The Eagles saw their season end in ugly fashion Monday night. A game in which their defense could not stop the Bucs’ offensive attack and their offense had trouble protecting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The struggles brought commentary out from all over the place, including former NFL head coach and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.

Gruden pointed out the obvious, that the Eagles’ protection was failing Hurts and the coaching staff needed to help their QB stay upright and help fight back in the game.

That post enlisted a reaction from former Washington QB and current ESPN analyst, Robert Griffin III who had played under Gruden.

Griffin posted a picture and captured it “Say WHATTTT???,” in disbelief of Gruden and his perceived way of how he would handle the situation.

That response garnered a reaction from Gruden once more stating “U weren’t prepared Robert?”

Not to be outdone, RGIII responded once more and alluded to how Gruden handled him and their situation.

“You told me you didn’t know how to coach a QB who could throw and run like me, so looks like you weren’t prepared Jay,” said Griffin, assumedly insinuating that despite how Gruden portrayed it online, it wasn’t exactly how he chose to handle him during his time in the NFL.

Griffin’s Time in Washington

Gruden took over the head job in Washington in 2014, just after Griffin’s knee injury that derailed their playoff hopes that season, and his career.

From Gruden’s arrival, it was clear that Griffin did not fit the West Coast system that he was implementing. And despite being the man in Washington before his arrival, Griffin was passed on for Kirk Cousins for the 2015 season, hence ending his run in Washington.

Apparently, time does not heal all wounds, and there are still clear bitter feelings between the two even almost a decade later.
