The Denver Broncos’ 2023 season was up and down, but ultimately it ended in them missing the playoffs. With the offseason officially underway for Denver, they will have a lot of decisions to make.
One decision that has likely been made already is the future of quarterback Russell Wilson. With him unlikely to return to the Broncos, an NFL insider has reported a potential destination for him. Which team is it?
Russell Wilson’s Potential 2024 Landing Spot
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Wilson could be heading to the Minnesota Vikings.
“Don’t be surprised if [Russell] Wilson is intrigued by Minnesota, assuming Kirk Cousins doesn’t re-sign with the Vikings,” Fowler said.
Although Cousins and the Vikings seem interested in a reunion, he is set to be a free agent and is recovering from a torn Achilles, which he suffered earlier in the 2023 season.
Before getting injured, Cousins had passed for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He has been with the Vikings since 2018. In his Vikings career, he has passed for 23,265 yards, 171 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions. His record with the Vikings is 50-37-1.
Wilson’s Denver Broncos Situation
Wilson started his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent 10 seasons. However, he was traded to the Denver Broncos ahead of the 2022 season, giving him a fresh start.
The Seahawks and Broncos’ trade details included the Broncos sending Drew Lock, Noah Fant, Shelby Harris, two first-round picks (2022 ninth overall and 2023 fifth overall), two second-round picks (2022 40th overall and 2023 37th overall), and a 2022 fifth-round pick for Wilson and a 2022 fourth-round pick.
Since being traded to the Broncos, Wilson has passed for 6,594 yards, 42 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. He has added 618 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. In 30 starts for Denver, Wilson has gone 11-19.
However, things soured in 2023 with the Broncos’ new head coach Sean Payton. Wilson was benched late in the season in favor of Jarrett Stidham. Wilson claimed he was approached during the team’s Week 9 bye, telling him to adjust his $37 million in guarantees or get benched.
“They definitely told me I was going to be benched and all that,” Wilson said to ESPN. “That whole bye week, I didn’t know what was going to be the case, I was going to be ready to play, I wanted to go to Buffalo and beat Buffalo [on Nov. 13]. … I wasn’t going to remove the injury guarantee.”
However, Payton said the decision was made as a result of his on-field performance, saying, “I can tell you we’re desperately trying to win. Sure, in our game today, there are economics and all those other things, but the No. 1 push behind this — and it’s a decision I’m making — is to get a spark offensively.”

Wilson is currently under contract until 2028, with him being an undrafted free agent in 2029. He had signed a five-year, $242.5 million contract with $161 million guaranteed.
Despite the late-season fallout, Payton did not rule out that the two sides could return together. He shared that the team has not yet decided on his future.
“That final decision has not been made,” Payton said to the Denver Gazette. The Broncos would suffer major cap penalties if they were to release Wilson now.
If the two sides do decide to reunite, the Broncos could still decide to separate down the road. Wilson’s contract includes a potential out after the 2025 season when Wilson would be turning 38 years old.
