On Sunday, the first game of the post-Bill Belichick era officially began for the storied New England Patriots franchise, as former player turned head coach Jerod Mayo made his debut as the leader on the sideline on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals.
With the Patriots parting ways with Belichick after 24 seasons while also trading Matthew Judon and Mac Jones, the consensus has been that New England is in full rebuild mode and likely in contention to be one of the worst teams in the league this year.
However, that didn’t seem like the case on Sunday when the Patriots went into Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati as heavy underdogs and pulled off perhaps the biggest upset of Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season.
With superstar quarterback Joe Burrow back under center, the Bengals were thought to be a legitimate Super Bowl title contender, but that seemed far from the case, as New England dominated the game from start to finish.
This game was emotional before, during, and after for veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who admitted to shedding some tears before they took on the Bengals because of what Mayo said to him.
#Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett said he cried 3 times before the game — one of those times was after Jerod Mayo’s pre-game pep talk.
“Mayo came up to me… before the game and he like started laughing and he’s like, ‘Man, you’re about to win us this game. You’re about to ball out.’… pic.twitter.com/ekpERY58d0

As a veteran journeyman, Brissett hasn’t been able to find a long-term job in the NFL but got off to a great start in his second stint with the Patriots, who could be a better team than expected.
Even though this could turn out to be a fluke and a bad day for the Bengals, the Patriots will ride this momentum moving forward as the team everyone expected to be an underdog in every game this season.
