Nick Wright declares that one veteran quarterback does not have enough talent to maintain job security

Nick Wright Says 1 Veteran QB Isn't Good Enough To Have Job Security

Job security for NFL quarterbacks is hard to come by for a number of reasons. For one, football is a violent sport, and one never knows when a major injury could rob a quarterback of a good deal of his ability and production. Daniel Jones, the starting quarterback of the New York Giants, has never been accused of being a good NFL QB, and amidst a report that the Giants wanted to trade up to draft Jayden Daniels, Nick Wright said on Fox Sports 1’s “First Things First” that Jones doesn’t deserve job security. Wright even said that it is possible Jones won’t be New York’s QB1 this fall. “Daniel Jones is not good enough to have job security,” said Wright. “… I think it’s possible Drew Lock starts for the New York Giants.”

New York had the No. 6 pick in this year’s draft, and plenty were surprised when they went with wide receiver Malik Nabers instead of a quarterback with that pick. Wright pointed out Jones’ meager numbers since coming into the NFL in 2019, and they haven’t exactly improved — in fact, they have only gotten worse. As a rookie, he threw for 3,027 yards and 24 touchdowns, but he managed just 11 touchdown passes the next year. In 2023, he had two touchdown passes and six interceptions through six games before an ACL injury ended his season. New York went 1-5 with Jones under center, and without him, they were 5-6 with two other men, including New Jersey native Tommy DeVito, filling in for Jones. Lock, who is no world-beater himself, was acquired in free agency this spring, and in four NFL seasons, he has thrown almost as many interceptions (23) as touchdown passes (28).
