Elena Rybakina demonstrated remarkable resolve by overcoming a set deficit to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova, the fourth seed from Russia, in the final of the WTA 500 2025 AUX Ningbo Open. Rybakina secured the title with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, showcasing her determination as she continues her quest to qualify for next month’s WTA Finals in Riyadh.
After the match, Rybakina expressed her admiration for Alexandrova’s performance throughout the tournament and reflected on the challenges faced this season. “It hasn’t been an easy year for all of us, a difficult schedule… thank you to my team for always pushing me to be better,” she stated. Rybakina’s victory marks her tenth career title, and she needs to reach at least the semi-finals at the upcoming Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo to secure her spot in the season-ending finals.
The young Russian player, Mirra Andreeva, who ranked just below Rybakina, opted out of competition next week, allowing Jasmine Paolini, who also announced her withdrawal, to clinch a place in the WTA Finals.
In the final match, Alexandrova began strongly, seizing an early lead and clinching the first set with a powerful performance. However, Rybakina quickly turned the tide, winning nine consecutive games and dominating the rest of the match. This win not only added a trophy to her collection but also increased her confidence and ranking, as she moved up to World No. 7.
Rybakina’s serve was a critical aspect of her success, landing 61% of first serves and winning an impressive 88% of those points. Furthermore, she delivered 11 aces and saved key break points, highlighting her resilience and tactical prowess under pressure.
On the doubles side, the pair of Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Liudmila Samsonova claimed the title after a hard-fought battle, overcoming the fourth-seeded duo of Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani in the final with scores of 5-7, 6-4, [10-8]. This victory comes after a series of impressive wins in previous rounds, solidifying their partnership’s strength on the court.
As both Rybakina and Alexandrova prepare for the next competition in Tokyo, all eyes will be on their performance, especially for Rybakina as she aims to finalize her qualification for the prestigious WTA Finals in Riyadh.
